Hello! My name is Holly and I am a technical writing professional and student at Austin Community College. This spring I earned my technical communications certificate and plan to receive my associate degree by the end of the year. My work experience has been mostly test, repair, maintenance, and assembly of various types of equipment, but I decided to make a career change to technical writing in the fall of 2020.

I have turned wrenches and followed work instructions for over twenty years. I started out as an avionics technician in the United States Air Force and have been testing, repairing, and assembling things ever since. I have worked with small laser diodes to large flight simulators. I have followed strict military standard test procedures and simple assembly instructions. I have applied science degrees in avionic systems technology, laser electro-optics technology, and business management. I also have experience as a contact service representative for the Veterans Affairs and Internal Revenue Service, helping customers over the phone and through written correspondence.

It was about 2008 when I realized that had an interest in writing documents such as test plans and procedures. My cubical was next to the documentation team and hearing their conversations made me think that maybe writing is something I should explore. I continued working jobs doing what I know because I was unsure about how to start a career in technical writing and it was a little scary to make the decision to change careers. I found the degree plan at Austin Community College and decided to go for it. I know it seems like it took me forever to make a change, but I am doing it now; I am a technical writer.

The Technical Writing Work tab has work samples in the following areas: MadCap Flare, XHTML & CSS, Photoshop, Drupal, Technical and Business Writing, easyDITA, Technical Editing, and Digital Publishing.

I also have a learning to-do list for independent learning goals.

I hope you enjoy viewing my portfolio and may you return to see the new skills I learn in the coming years.
